I was told yesterday that Darrin's official release date is Saturday. He's determined to do everything they want him to do, so he can get out and go home. He has been in the hospital for a month today. What a terrible price for him and his family to pay, but what a blessing that he's doing so well.
Darrin was moved back to rehab Sunday. He was nervous about his first rehab session Monday morning, but was just fine. I went to see him Monday afternoon, and he always wants me to high five him. How do you feel good about slapping someone's splint-encased hand? He ate a PB&J sandwich while I was there, and I guess that was some of the first chewable food he'd had since surgery. He's had lots of fruit and yogurt. And he said the last pain meds he had were at 3:00 AM. I was there around 5:00 PM. He says maybe twice a day he'll get a headache and ask for some medicine.
Darrin looks really good. No helmet anymore, and they just took out his last I.V. tube as I got there. He has 67 staples in his head, as counted by his nephew. His head is still a bit swollen on the left side, but not too bad. Other than the shaved head, he really looks like my brother. And there are no more tubes or ties or anything else anymore. Just scars, which he's totally willing to show off to any little kid that asks. I'm not sure the moms appreciate him grossing out their kids, but hey, if you have a trophy there's no sense in hiding it, right?
